Plan Your International Pet Travel Paperwork Timeline

By Transcontinental Pet Movers LLC · Updated October 11, 2026

There is no single paperwork timetable for every international pet journey. The destination, species, records and route determine what must happen and in what order. Start planning when you know a trip is likely, rather than assuming the final health certificate appointment is the only preparation needed.

1. Define the journey before fixing appointments

Write down your departure airport, destination country and city, approximate travel date, connections, intended entry point and how the pet will travel. Include any onward travel that may affect documentation.

Ask the airline about pet acceptance before relying on a passenger itinerary. In-cabin, checked baggage and manifest cargo are different arrangements. A route that works for the owner is not automatically an available route for the animal.

2. Gather records in one place

Prepare a list of the pet’s identification details and the vaccination, laboratory and earlier travel records you hold. Tell the practice where previous veterinary work was performed so it can obtain the records needed for review.

Do not assume an older certificate or completed test can be reused. Your veterinarian and consultant need to check how earlier work fits the intended journey. Use the inquiry form to summarize your situation; send sensitive records only through the process agreed after engagement.

3. Check the destination’s current requirements

Use the USDA APHIS destination guidance and the destination authority’s current instructions with your veterinarian. Identify any advance applications, tests, vaccinations or treatments that may be needed. Record both prerequisites and validity windows.

Do not copy another traveller’s timetable as your own. Different species, origins, routes or travel dates can change which requirements apply. A generic checklist is a starting point for discussion, rather than confirmation that a pet is ready to travel.

4. Coordinate the certificate appointment and endorsement

Confirm that the veterinary practice can issue the correct certificate and arrange USDA endorsement when required. Work backwards from the destination’s applicable validity window, allowing for document submission, corrections and return of originals where needed.

APHIS notes that there may be limited time between certificate issuance, endorsement and travel. There is no universal number of days to use for every journey. The practice should confirm the exact dates that apply to your pet.

5. Recheck when the itinerary changes

If the flight date, route or destination changes, check the paperwork timeline before assuming the documents remain usable. Contact your veterinarian and consultant with the revised details. Significant changes or certificate redrafting may require additional work under the engagement terms.
